Phoenix Leads the Way in Record Holiday Travel for 2024

As 2024 draws to a close, a record-breaking number of travelers are gearing up to hit the roads, skies, and rails. AAA projects 119.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holiday period, from Saturday, December 21, to Wednesday, January 1, 2025. Of these, over 2.3 million Arizonans are set to join the holiday rush—a 2% increase from last year.

Phoenix, a key travel hub, is expected to see some of the highest holiday rental car demand, according to AAA partner Hertz. With Arizona’s pleasant winter weather and bustling attractions, the state is a prime destination for both local and visiting holidaymakers.

Holiday Travel by the Numbers

By Car:
Driving remains the top choice, with 107 million Americans hitting the road this holiday season. Of those, 2 million will be Arizonans, nearly matching the record set in 2019. Lower gas prices are expected to fuel this surge; Arizona’s average is $3.15 per gallon, slightly above the national average but well below last year’s prices.

The busiest travel days for road trips will be December 22 and 23, so AAA recommends planning ahead for heavy traffic on key Arizona highways like I-10 and US-60.

By Air:
Airports are gearing up for a bustling season, with 7.85 million passengers flying nationwide. In Arizona, approximately 181,000 travelers will pass through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and other local airports. While flights are 4% more expensive than last year, the convenience and speed of air travel remain attractive for long-distance holiday trips.

Travelers are encouraged to arrive early at airports, especially during peak days, and consider travel insurance to protect their plans.

By Other Modes:
Travel by bus, train, and cruise is seeing a remarkable rebound, with 4.47 million Americans choosing these modes. Arizona is contributing about 80,000 travelers, the highest in two decades. Domestic cruise bookings have surged 37% from last year, making this an increasingly popular option for holiday adventurers.

Phoenix Shines as a Holiday Destination

Arizona’s capital city is drawing visitors with its unique blend of holiday magic and desert charm. Top attractions include:

  • Pratt Brothers Christmas at Rawhide Western Town in Chandler, with over 7 million lights and family-friendly activities.
  • Christmas at Schnepf Farms, offering ice skating, hayrides, and a dazzling light display.
  • Local hiking trails like Camelback Mountain and South Mountain for those seeking adventure in cooler weather.

AAA Travel Tips for a Stress-Free Holiday

  1. Plan Ahead: Avoid last-minute surprises by booking accommodations, rentals, and tickets early.
  2. Arrive Early: Airports, train stations, and car rental hubs will be crowded, so allow extra time.
  3. Pack Light: Stick to carry-on luggage to bypass potential delays with checked baggage.
  4. Stay Safe: Keep an emergency kit in your car, especially for road trips across Arizona’s more remote areas.
  5. Enjoy the Ride: The holidays are about connection—pack your patience and enjoy the journey.

This holiday season, whether you’re staying in Phoenix or venturing out, take the time to embrace the joy of the season and make memories with loved ones. Safe travels!
